Project Description

Client: Lois Matthews Location: Sumner, Christchurch

This customer contacted us in November 2017 wanting this patio tiling completed before Xmas, patiently we waited for the new concrete to cure, despite one contractor falsely saying "2 days" is enough drying time for new concrete. Another tiler stated, simply applying some bandage over the joint between old and new concrete, will allow you to bridge it with tiles. This would most definitely crack the tiles eventually, earthquake or not. On this job we used Mapei products. A combination of bonded screed and render was used to create fall towards the lawn away from the house. We cut and polished a border tile so that the full tiles finished on the join of old and new concrete. This joint was filled with a flexible sealant to cope with movement. A highly deformable S2 adhesive was used, because of large format tiles and stresses of NZs freeze/thaw cycles. When getting a quote from a tiler, check on their written quote for the specified adhesive. Not all tile adhesives are alike, buyer beware.

The Challenges

Outdoor tiling requires building a fall, usually with a screed under the tiles, so that rain can flow away from the house.
